Private Floating World

Private Floating World Consists of three round transmounted c-prints of Disneyland’s Matterhorn Mountain and the adjacent submarine ride shot from the air by the artist. The prints are framed with ½” thick metal and are 20” in diameter each. These images were once part of Disneyland Interruptions II and were reformatted as “Private Floating World”. The title is taken from the 1977 article in “Perspecta, the Yale Architectural Journal” by Charles Moore, entitled “You have to pay for the public life”, where Moore refers to Los Angeles’ suburban homes as “private floating worlds” and where he also describes Disneyland as the perfect public space. Installed in an asymmetrical arrangement these tondos suggest floating islands and ironically address the Disney fantasy “lands” heavy (incapacitated) thought bubbles.
